Questions on auto mode navigation

Hi folks

 

I set up an new ardupilotmega system on a funjet and have great sucess with default everything.(xbee working great as well)

 

stabilization works great, as does fly by wire. I next tested return to landing - which worked remarkably well.

 

I then tested a simple 3 waypoint triangle path immediately south of my position and had some problems. Essentially the plane took off straight south until it was dot. I took controls but could not tell orientation very well. I put it to return to landing and it came back perfectly!!! I thought it was a gonner for sure.

 

when it intially took off south, it seemed to like it intially banked left, then right almost like it didn't have the waypoints lised then just headed south. What do you think happened? why would RTL work great but waypoints not? My radio does correctly select auto, and I was able to download the correct waypoints from the ardu after it returned?

 

my second question has to do with RTL circling above, when I let the plane circle above home, it would produce a nice circle, but every now and then it decided to turn the opposite direction then started orbiting in the opposite direction - it seemed to do this every now and then. Not a big deal but is this expected behaviour??
