I am new to this whole ordeal. I want to build my own quadcopter to get started and learn how this stuff works and be able to understand all the basics on the parts of a quadcopter. I always thought I needed an R/C controlled with the transmitter and receiver blah blah stuff. The more I look into it seems like using some sort of auto pilot is the way to go. Even for recreational and eventually commercial use I want to know what you guys think. And what it the best option to go about building my own. I read the articles in the latest edition of Make Magazine and I've priced everything up it just seems like auto pilot (ardupilot preferably) is the thing to do nowadays.
Thanks so much,
Owen

If you want to build your own system that includes a quadcopter, the document attached to this blog post would be a great start for focusing your project and estimating its cost. You might also want to look at one of the quadcopter projects on Instructables.com, for example this entry and this entry, both by DIYD members. Also, take a look at this recent diagram. If you like to read a lot... especially the comments from other makers, take a look at this page and this page. Best wishes for your project!
