Replacing NAZA with ArduPilot

Please help if anyone can... After many happy & stable flights with a barely one month old NAZA FC, for some inexplicable reason the quad will barely remain airborne for more than 2 mins-MAX before swaggering and loitering about barely holding alt/pos either in 'Att'/GPS' mode or Manual. In fact it bares all the hall marks of a battery dying but the batteries I'm using are NEW and at time of landing are barely at 75% ! I have double checked & re-calibrated everything & then again. Upon reading forums posted everywhere I have read everything from taping the FC left side with black electrical tape to block sun to the possibility of it being a result of solar flare activity. But sitting under the jet black carapice of the Bumble Bee Quad there is barely any light that enters beneath....So what gives ?? Maybe the Solar Flare theory could just check out. I mean after all, but a week ago I was confidently FPV'n. Come Saturday the problems began. Solar storms can last for days right ?

Now here is my question. Can the Ardu Pilot FC sold here be as easily connected up to offer the same simplistic 'go & fly' application as NAZA ? And is it as GOOD? Sure being impressed by the NAZA wasn't hard coming from a crappy GAUI G344 FC. Sure it is a bit cheaper than the NAZA FC but does it come with all the required instructions for a largely newbie to the game can follow ? And is it as prone to the same problems as the NAZA is experiencing now?

Any ideas on either FC would be greatly appreciated. Please Help !

  • Hi Ivor!

Go into your Naza Assistant and take a look at your voltage setting. If you have changed batteries i.e 3s to 4s etc. You may need to reset your voltage to match that of the battery you are using.

  • Hi,

Dang, I have seen Wookongs struggling with the same kind of problem too!! I wonder if they have made one mess-up at DJI that affected them both. It's strange with so much conjunction of those DJIs not flying ... could it be winter cold batteries? Did you measure the terminal voltage in flight?

Anyway... I wouldn't call the APM quite as plug and fly like as the DJIs. One is a product, the other is a project... There are many more things to set (you can omit some) and more things to learn. Like R/C and brushless controller calibration, tuning PIDs and having to add an external battery voltage or current meter if you need one.

Performance is good and still improving. The last time I checked DJI (Wookong) was still better though.

    Prone to same problems? No.

ArduCopter had some nasty tendencies to do more or less spontaneous/mysterious/sporadic motor starts the last time I played with it (got thoroughly tired of it), but I have heard it has improved a lot since.

    Regards

    Soren
