Such a stupid newb move!!

So i'm assembling my quadcopter, I think i'm already to calibrate ESC, when I connect the battery all of a sudden all four ESC's are smoking. I got the battery disconnected quickly after that. The LiPo was warm but not hot.

I tracked down the problem to soldering the yellow battery connector on backwards. At this point i'm reregistering my complaint, I hope the assembly literature gets updated. The yellow connector has its - centered on a parting line so it looks alot like a + sign. It took some close inspection to figure out what I did. Now i'm out $75 before i even started.

So my real question is, how do I tell if the LiPo is safe? The charger has it at 11.8 volts, pretty well balanced. it smells a little funny, but i never smelled it before so it could be the plastics. I have it chilling out in a a charging bag right now. Should I dispose of it? keep using it?

Thanks, and hello for the first time

Jonathan

I've noticed that little design flaw on the XT60 connectors. My only advice is always check red-to-red and black-to-black when connecting something new. I always seem to solder the wrong wire to the wrong terminal occasionally. It's Sod's law :-(

Maybe we should add this to the instructions as a check list (NASA avoids human error by doing this) that helps double check the assembly to avoid potential mistakes.

As for the battery, if you can do a discharge / charge cycle ok the only outcome maybe a slightly shorter lifespan for the battery.
  • If the LiPo doesn't show any bulging, I would do a balanced discharge then recharge.
