RTL issues with airspeed sensor

Hi All,

I solved a strange problem this weekend, but I'm not sure why it's a problem.  Here's what I'm seeing:

Hardware is APM 2.5 running Arduplane 2.68.  When I have an airspeed sensor hooked up, enabled and have "use airspeed" checked I see really weird behavior in RTL mode.  Manual and FBW-A work just fine.  The plane flies like a dream.  When I flip into RTL mode, the plane goes max throttle and enters a dive of about 30 or so degrees.

For giggles, I disconnected the airspeed sensor, disabled it in the MissionPlanner and unchecked "use airspeed".  On my last flight I flipped into RTL and the plane did exactly what I would expect it to do ... it gently turned back to where I launched and entered an orbit at about 300 feet.

One theory and one question:

I suspect that maybe a target airspeed is set too high for the plane to safely maintain, though I'm not sure what parameter that is.  Cruise airspeed in the ArduPID airspeed box is set to 12 m/s (26 mph) which sounds a little fast to me.  Would lowering that make sense in order to resolve this issue?  Is there some other parameter(s) that I should be concerned about?

The other question I have is regarding the utility of the A/S sensor.  The plane seems to do really well with the A/S sensor disengaged.  What are the advantages of using it?

TIA,

Peter
