RTL Often Flies Away

Hi All,

I've recently got an ArduCopter (3DR Hexa frame) and have finally mastered manual controls. Over the past few days I've been experimenting with some of the more 'autonomous' modes.

Return To Launch mode just doesn't seem to be working - if I hover say about 15m in altitude and about 10m away from where I launched (note: motors armed AFTER a 3D GPS fix was obtained) it just decides to fly (quickly!) off in what seems to be a random direction. I initially though compass wasn't calibrated, however after checking, it's working fine.

Today I attempted the first auto mission - worked great, however the last command I put was a RTL - it just went a little crazy and started turning fast and flying off (despite being meters away from launch). I'm vary weary of it getting out of visual range to properly control it so I'm switching back to Stabilize mode fairly quickly. Perhaps I should be more patient?!?

Strangely though, the RTL mode has worked great once. Yet, all other times (including after the success) it just seems to fly off before I quickly regain manual control. Has anyone else experienced this?

I ideally would like to rely on RTL as almost a safety mechanism in case it did get too far away to accurately control, however, at the moment I don't have the trust in it!

Finally - I decreased the speed at which it travels between waypoints to 1m/s so I can keep up with it, this works great in auto but doesn't seem to be obeyed in RTL.. (it just darts off like it's on some sort of urgent mission!)

Any tips/hints? I'll hopefully head back out later (on charge atm) and do some more testing.

  • Just been flying - set it in auto, worked perfectly for the first few waypoints, towards the end it decided to fly off in completely the wrong direction. At this point it was quite far away so determining orientation was extremely difficult. Adding to that the windy conditions and it now is stuck in a very high tree.

Not sure how I'm going to get it down

  • Compass error. There should be Logic that detects it.
  • I'm having very similar issues, not sure why yet. It's been raised on the dev board, hopefully a fix / explanation to follow soon.
