Sad end to a great aircraft.......

I know this isn't a UAV aircraft or that and other people bar us from the uk probably won't know what it is but today I went to the retirement ceremony for the BAE Nimrod MR2.

This was one of the best ISTAR platforms available and cant be beaten for submarine warfare but due to government cuts it has been retired a year early..

Like every aircraft it has had its problems and accidents and lives have been lost but it has saved many more and sadly with early retirement there could be a chance more lives could be lost without its invaluable sar cover and istar capability...

  • One of my lecturers worked on the Nimrod upgrade program, back in the day. The stories he tells us... what a farce. I'm not a huge fan though, but that's mostly because I think it's a crime to take an aircraft as pretty as the Comet and turn it into something that looks like that... Still, an impressively capable aircraft, once they got it working.

I did a few tapestry flights in them back in the day, very impressive kit on board for finding things. Oh and a great galley, I can remember being stood between the drivers with an ice cream in hand running into the display at Mildenhall, probably about 1986 and as they ran and broke somebody (not me) had not secured stuff in the galley and it all came crashing forward. Happy days.
