Shielding APM from ESC

Hi all

I've finished building installing my APM into my glider. Unfortunately I could not find a way to relocate the ESC easily, now the APM is tied down on a bunch of cables on top of the ESC, right next to the motor.

Will there be interference? If so, is there a way I can shield the APM, or do I have to perform major surgery on my Radian Pro?

Many thanks

  • Hi Hein

Here are some pics of what I have done to fit my APM to the Radian Pro.

I made the shield out of thin cardboard which i cut to shape so it would fit nice and snug in the Radian's nose. I tried to keep the shield as close to the motor and speedo as possible to give more space for cables and battery leads. I then covered the cardboard with Aluminium tin foil. I used thin double sided Carpet tape to apply the foil to the cardboard. I then covered the foil with insulation tape as not to short out anything anywhere.
I also cut around the battery area on both left and right sides to make space for the apm servo cabled to fit when the canopy is squeezed on.

I tuck all the cables in and tape the canopy on when ready to fly.

    Regards
    John

I have never had an issue with APM being affected by interference from the ESC.  Interference from the x-bee is the most frequent issue I have run in to.

Just set everything up and then run up the motor through the full range of rpm in both hardware manual and software manual modes and watch for spurious motion on the control surfaces.  A little bit of jitter is OK.  A lot is not.
