Small UAV-autopilot etc.

Hello all!I have long held an interest in UAVs but had no idea where to start. Man was I astounded when I ran across this site!My first UAV project will (hopefully) be appropriately simple. I want a very small, light UAV that can be hand launched, fly a couple miles, snap a few pics (or video if that's easier) and fly home without any input from me. Just to be clear, I would of course have the ability to take manual control of the aircraft if something goes wrong, but hopefully I won't need to. I'm a static modeler by trade so I already have a few ideas about how to build it, mostly what I need is information on where to locate a system that can fly my UAV. Is the autopilot system advertised on this site appropriate for a small, cheap and simple prototype UAV of the kind I'm talking about? Now, being a person with great ambitions in everything I do, I am already thinking about my second UAV, which I want to be larger and more capable. Once again, the primary purpose is photo-recon type operations.. Where can I find information on other types of autopilot systems that might be suitable for larger, more sophisticated aircraft? Something that could fly a runway launched UAV for longer duration flights? Is there a system or am I looking at building my own? Where are good resources for this type of thing? Also, is there a system or program or any information at all on a camera that can stream video live from the UAV? Possibly allowing me to (theoretically) fly out of my line of vision? Many thanks in advance!-Avery

Just read the site's many blogs and threads and you will find that this is exactly the site you need... with a great twist... everything we discusss and share here is open-source, so its not going to cost an arm and a leg!

Many of the members have many different types of projects, but all are working with the same dream you have.

Also of interest will be the blogs dealing with the regulatory aspect of the hobbie. Unfortunately the U.S. seems to be very overbearing in regard to things like beyond line-of-sight flight.

Just start on the home page and read up on the many areas here at DIYDrones.
