We've had a lot of success measuring over water with Lidar. Of course there are a few tricks. Firstly, the laser has to have sufficient power to get a reading off the surface of the water - low power units don't work. Secondly, the timing and post processing algorithms must be able to handle intermittent signals because the surface of the water can reflect signals away.
At this time we aren't offering a small UAV compatible Lidar for water applications but there is one in the pipeline for release early next year. If anyone is interested then please contact Tracy at info@lightware.co.za
