Still camera recommendation for aerial survery from UAV

Hi,

 

I'm looking for a camera recommendation. Here are some requirements:

 

1) Zoom not required.

2) Good optics and high pixel count for aerial imaging.

3) External triggering. Could be as simple as digital IO or as complex as serial protocol.

4) Light enough to carry as payload in over-sized glider type airframe

    Mike and Adam,
    Where do I find info for how to stream video from a sony cyber shot and trigger it to take stills? Or if some one knows a simple way to send a hdmi signal via a x-bee pro, say from a sony bloggie (13mp) that would be nice. I wouldn't even mind just a simple trigger for the bloggie, thru the usb or hdmi port, since I can use my simple eye-cam extreme to send the lower resolution video back to my video recorder and then trigger the stills based on that, then down load the video and stills from the bloggie or cyber shot after landing my hexacopter. Taking the digital signal from the hdmi and converting it to an S-video signal seems like a waste, and not sure how that would be done. Any suggestions on where to find schematics, datasheets, code for arduino, propellar, or pic, and info related to this is greatly appreciated.

    Short update:

     

    I've pretty much resigned myself to mod-ing a consumer digital camera. There are lots of industrial cameras out there with rs232 interfaces, but none of them seem to include flash memory... the last thing I want to do is pull the image using my mega2560. I'll probably go with the powershot recommendation from Mike. Objective will be to strip off the case and wire the shutter control to a digital on my microcontroller board.

    Here are some additional requirements you might also want to adopt:

    5) ability to disable the "power saver" mode (nothing like landing after your missing to find out that 5 minutes in, the camera turned itself off due to "no user input" - believe it or not, many point and shoot camera do not have an "off" for this feature, just 2 min, 5 min, 10 min, 15 min and 30 min. 

    6) Autofocus (but I guess that is assumed)

    7) good automatic handling of whitebalance and wide range of variable lighting, whatever photographers call these features

     

    Just some ideas.... for more requirements
