Stupid question but I have to ask.

Hi Guys I feel embarased to ask this but here it goes.

I have just added a osd to my quad as I am doing FPV, the question is at what voltage will the ESC shut down.  I dont let my 4000ma 3s go under 3.3v per cell, but if I miscalculate the time it takes me to return I need some margin for error.  So at what voltage will the esc tell me to get stuffed.

Any replies would be appreciated.

Regards Pete

  • This $4 HK battery monitor (http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/uh_viewItem.asp?idProduct=...) is a must for your Quad.  I solderd mine directly to the power distribution board and stuck it underneath, beside the battery, with some foam tape.  When my Quad is flying around, I just look up and can tell roughly how much time is left in the battery.  When I see red, its time to find a landing pad.

    above 11.1V solid blue
    10.2 -11.1V flashing blue

9.9-10.2V solid red (time to land)
under 9.9V beeping and flashing red

  • Thanks much appreciated.

Usually this can be set on the esc.  Often 3.3-3.1-2.9V per cell are selectable.  Then you can choose soft cutoff (gently reduce motorpower) or hard cutoff (immediately stop motor).

Actually it is best for a copter to set the esc's to NimH batteries, so that the cutoff gets disabled.  It's better to damage (only) your battery then to crash your whole copter.

In any case, I have mine set to 2.9, but honestly it doesn't make much of a difference.  When a lipo is empty, the voltage drops VERY quickly.  So a few seconds after hitting 3.3 you'll hit 2.9 aswell.
