I am interested in getting started with quadcopters and diving into ArduCopter. I have no RC experience and read on here that it would be good to start with a plane instead of a quadcopter.
First I wanted to verify that indeed it is a good idea for me to start with a plane instead of a quadcopter and second I researched that the Super Cub DSM is a good first plane. I found one on craigslist here:

I noticed that the front hood looks missing but that should not effect the flight correct? Is this a plane I could turn into a drone with ArduPlane once I gain the needed RC experience and eventually progress my way to a quadcopter?

I am pretty new to this too so feel free to take this with a grain of salt but if you want to fly a quad or multirotor then I think the best thing to do would go get an inexpensive quad. If you get a fixed wing you won't have an opportunity to practice hover flight and landing. I personally bought an MQX to practice flying and getting used to orientation. Now I expect the mqx to be much faster than the quad I am building and it doesn't have a stable flight mode, thus I felt it would be good to learn on something more difficult and something I didn't mind crashing.
By the way, the mqx, I crashed it... a lot... Now I don't really crash anymore so I decided to build a heavy lift quad for aerial photography.
