Time to Decide!

I have saved the money and now want to make sure I am placing it on the right product.  I want to do Autonomous flights, non professional video and photos. Easy to fly and stable in the air.  I will want to have FPV of some sort and thought about something utilizing the Gopro camera?  I have thought about and think that I want the new Iris, but I have also watched the X8 and Y6   I would love to hear from those of you that may have some good knowledge of these systems so I can make that decision.  I am open to other suggestions if I have not covered the right equipment.

Thanks

  • It seems you are the target audience for the Iris. If I were you, I would either get the Iris for an out-of-the-box experience, or I would get an assemble-it-yourself kit of a 450 clone from China and an APM to learn on (and not worry about when you crash). If you go full 3DR, get the Iris. No reason not to get the latest greatest. Otherwise, go cheap. Or, if your focus is really "easy to fly", and minimal to no garage engineering (which I think is the funnest part), consider DJI.

Remember, 3DR is still only selling "developer kits" of the Iris. As the name implies, I'm sure they are still making significant tweaks to improve the out-of-the-box experience. I would definitely wait until the release of the full version, even if it comes after Christmas season. This is a big release and hopefully will be worth the wait for you. Any quad this size (from any manufacturer) will not be a toy, therefore it will only be easy to fly after you've practiced a lot. (smile...)

  • I can say only that I was in the same boat as you (I could have written your post).  I did my due diligence and decided on the Iris...I just got it yesterday and haven't even gotten it in the air yet, but I think it will perform as promised.  There may be some growing pains as the PixHawk board gets perfected, but that is ok...if I come up with anything else to add, I'll be happy to do so.
