Transmitter/ Receiver CHOICE: Arducopter

Hi Guys,

I have a quick question. My budget for a transmitter/ receiver pair is +/- 100$. I can see that there are really cheap ones out there, but I would like to ask you about the compatibilityperformance and failsafe usage with Arducopter (i.e. APM 2.5) board.

Here are the ones I found:

Transmitter 1: Turnigy Tx/Rx HobbyKing

Transmitter 2: WFly Tx/Rx UnmannedTechFly

Please pitch in your opinion and experience (if you had with them). This will help me decide quickly.

Thanks,

Shyam.

  • For a hundred you'll get just a Tx/Rx combo that is worth, well, a hundred. It will work, sure, maybe even be good at what it does. But the real question is how long!

See, an RC system is a piece of the puzzle in which I want to trust. If there's anything going wrong sometime, somewhere, and I know it will for sure, because we're talking about RC hobby here, then I would hate it if it's because of my radio system. I fly F3F gliders in comp that are worth 2.5k equiped, that can be 5kg heavy, that sometimes fly in the course at maybe 150-200 km/h unfar from other pilots or comp crew or visitors, and I wouldn't like to keep risk minimal at all flying time. I know I would most certainly not if I fly a hundred buck radio and can afford a better system.

Now you'd say multis are another story, flying alone in the park. But in fact it's not. It's all about a more or less heavy set of pieces glued/taped/screwed together spinning >=4 razor cutting props at high RPM. Moreover, one day that machine will fly by its own to some waypoint in the sky, volunteraly chosen or not. And one day it will fall down, hopefully where nobody is located, but who knows how and where it will happen. I would really hate it to learn later it's because of my cheap radio system. And an eventual victim would hate it too, and his lawyer too, and a judge certainly too.

I always changed my radio system as soon as I had the slightest impression it failed at some point. I did not follow this rule only once. I was REALLY lucky it did not harm someone and it costed 2.5 kquids in flying machine. I changed radio immediately for the system I fly now, and I feel safe again. I see my old radio right nothere on the benchw. I probably will smash it with a hammer some day, even if it still working, because I do not want to take responsability selling it to someone.

I'm not blaming anybody flying a 100$ system, sure not. I feel lucky being able to fly an expensive piece of technology in which lots and lots of engineering hours were invested, and I know not everybody can afford that. Only one thing is important here: everyone should act responsibly at all times when buying, building, flying RC machines. I try to do my best in this sense, even if I know my RC insurance covers 2 mios in damage. And if I have to work 1-2 more months to be able to afford the better piece, then I'd rather do that.

    Just my 2 cents, though.
