Trouble unbricking xBee

I have unbricked my xbee several times following these instructions and never had a problem doing it but now I can't get it to unbrick. I'm using these instructions at the bottom of this page.

http://code.google.com/p/arducopter/wiki/Quad_TelemetryPage

Everything usually goes fine but then towards the end of the process it displays the ACTION REQUIRED dialog a second time. It says in the instructions to reset the interface board but I'm not finding a button or a reset pin that I can ground. I'm using the diydrones xbee interface board.

The xbee itself says XBP09-DPWIT but when I test/query it in X-CTU I get:

Communication with modem. OK

Modem type - XBP09-DM

Modem firmware version = 1161

Why does the modem type read DM and not DP? If I choose DM in the modem configuration then I get other options like digimesh 900 etc.

How can I get this working again? The computer side is working fine but I need to get the copter side unbricked.

  • Unbricking is much easier if you're using X-CTU version 5.2.5.0.

I also recommend poking around here: ftp://ftp1.digi.com/support/utilities/

  • If there is a special reason you need to unbrick an xbee, then I don't know how to help you, but I finally made mine work fine. All I had to do is reinstall the FTDI drivers on Windows 7... Windows 7 was 'updating' the drivers soon after connecting the xbee to USB port, replacing the FTDI drivers.. Thank you Windows 7.
  • I'm having the same issue.  I can get 1161 onto ONE of my xbees, by downgrading to 1002, then upgrading to 1061 (it then reads as having version 1161).  My other xbee will take version 1061 just fine, but won't upgrade to 1161.

    This is most confusing.

  • Well don't ask me what I did but I got it working again. They both still report DM when I do a query but when I do a read, they both show DP. I think it's normal and has always been that way or at least it doesn't make a difference because I have them talking again and the procedure to change from DP to DM didn't work in my case. Modem firmware I ended up using was 1002. Not sure if I will try to upgrade to 1161 or if that was part of the problem.

Is still get different light activity on the 2 modules but I'm guessing that is because one is on the copter side and one on the usb?

Now to find out why my new magnetometer seems a little flakey :)

  • I've tried many times the directions for fixing a xbee that shows as XBP09-DM but should be DP. I'm never able to get the query dialog to display that it's a DP but it always reads the parameters correct as a XBP09-DP. Here are some screen shots in case it offers any clues.

  • I swapped the xbees with their adapters to see if it was something related to the adapter and the problem goes with the adapter, so it seems the problem is with the adapter but I can read and write to both of them and they both have 1002 firmware. The difference is one does not display the orange lights when reading writing from it when I plug it into the USB.

  • Still trying to resolve this. I don't know if this issue is with the xbee or the diydrones adapter but whatever it is, I hope the problem is solved soon because this is a huge time waster!

    So…

What I'm seeing now is when I read the configuration on the pc side xbee, I see the 2 orange transmit/receive lights flicker and all seems ok but when I plug the copter side into the usb cable and do the same thing, even though it reads back the proper configuration, I NEVER see the 2 orange lights flicker when I read the configuration on the copter side xbee when plugged into the USB just to test it.

Does this help solve the problem or do I need to trash this xbee that seems to work but doesn't :-/
