I can’t get my computer to talk to Mission Planner. I plug my ArduCopter into a LiPo, turn on the transmitter (a Spektrum DX8, which is bound to the ArduCopter), then connect a USB cable to the ArduCopter. When I open Mission Planner the only connection options available are UDP and TCP — no COM port. What’s quite puzzling is that this worked when I first got the Arducopter, but not now. I’ve tried three different USB cables, no luck.
I’m on a Mac running Parallels and Windows XP and, like many Mac users, I’m mostly thumbs when it comes to diving under the hood in Windows.
When I connect the USB cable, I hear a distinctive Thunk sound from Windows and see a dialog asking whether to connect to the Mac or Windows. I've tried both. Neither makes a difference.

I'm a Mac/Parallels/WinXP user too, and once you understand the system, it's easy:
To plug a USB device into Parallels/XP, you need to physically connect it ( to the mac), and then use the Parallels -> Devices Menu -> USB -> [put a tick next to the device/s you want connected to XP, everything else is connected to you mac].
Infact, if you use Arduino IDE from your MAC, then you'll find that you'll need to un-tick this tickbox to program the APM , and re-tick the tickbox to use the APM Planner. ( equivalent to unplugging it from your XP box, and plugging it into your MAC ).
If you don't see a "COMX" device in XP, then it's either that the tickbox is not checked, or you don't have the drivers installed correctly. remember to wait 10 or so seconds after plugging it in ( or changing the tickbox), just to be sure its detected.
