After searching quite a bit, I've found this post: http://diydrones.ning.com/forum/topics/ardupilot-power-supply?commentId=705844%3AComment%3A158510. Here Chris Anderson says that anything that's ok for the receiver would be ok for the APM.
Voltage tolarance has been discussed quite a bit, but I've found posts (http://diydrones.ning.com/forum/topics/what-is-the-voltage-tolerance-on-apm?commentId=705844%3AComment%3A754549, though for APM 2) that reports erattic behaviour @ 5.5v.
My UBEC is outputing 5.5v, which is plugged into the receiver, which in turn powers the APM, but sitll at 5.5v.
Am I taking a chance flying like this?
Many thanks

I'm going to do it the other way round - 5.5v into the OUPUT rails, with JP1 installed. Should be enough juice to do the input side and the rx. I hope that's the way to do it...
