IMO without forking out a lot of money, the best way is to fly FPV(First Person View) and avoid collision by stearing just as you would in a car!
I believe there are systems which can detect an avoid(pricey).
Also there are radios which will send out radio signals(i think i saw a UHF radio which would do that). If your talking about avoid collision with a real plane or heli.
