What is the proper way to get help.

I have an 3DR Arducopter with Turnigy AE-30 esc's. I have a 2.5 APM and brand new 2838 motors. In fact, everything is brand new.

I have another Quad that flies perfectly. It comes back when it is "called" and flies very nicely.

The 3DR is a little larger and I outfitted it with 10x4.7 props. My problem is that  I tried an APM1.0 and now the new 2.5 and they both do the same thing. Neither will lift the 3DR off the ground successfully!

It seems to randomly tip to a different side each time I try to lift off.

My question which I submitted to support was "can a speed controller work yet not work the same as another" In other words if it only powered one motor I would not know it was bad, but it I use 4 of them and four motors and compare them side by side, could they react differently. I have the XT 60 connectors throughout. Something is not working right and I need some help narrowing it down.

I never received a response from support (except an automated response) so I am turning to the forums for help. I am way over budget as everything has been replaced and I just bought new speed controllers just in case.

Any ideas, anyone?

  • It seems that this is a common problem for the AE-30A. There is an alternative though if you are adventurous. There is a new flash out for these controllers. It is not factory but the results seem to be good for quads.

Most speed controllers, if identical and calibrated identically, will work the same, some of the cheaper or no-name brands can have variation issues but even then they are normally quite close. If your quad is randomly tipping then something else may be wrong.

For testing any major change I normally spool up the props to about 1/4 throttle (or about half way to the point it could take off), then give right roll on the Tx stick, the quad should tip over gently to the right. This confirms to me that the left hand two motors are lifting correctly and the right two are lessening their lift. Do the same for left roll, forward and backwards pitch to confirm that (at least) the controls are operating the correct way.
