  • I'm Looking for comparison for Autopilot's and IMO's , like http://www.u-nav.com/images/matrix.pdf.
  • I'd start with some flight experience also unless you already have it. You should be able to fully manually control your vehicle before adding autonomous features to it - to avoid crashing and also as a failsafe.
Also depending on your resources you might want to consider that a fixed wing airplane will always be cheaper to make and to run than any other configuration of moving rotors wether singles or quads.
I started with UGV's and indoor navigation a few years back and went from there(simpler with 2D navigation than 3D). I would have liked to make a helicopter type MAV but the price/performance and the abilities I would be able to give it with the limited payload capacity made me decide to go for fixed wing planes for now.
I will return to the heli once I have time from my other projects.

  • 1- Understanding technology , learning terms , reading forums , articles , create imagination and decide what you want.
2- Try simple ( maybe not for me ) applications like taking photos , taking geotagging photos , sending data between ground to aircraft.
    3- Choosing starting framework.
4- Duplicate one solution step by step
5- Developing project with your goals. Adding some new features.
    6- Bugtracking and documentation
    7- Return step 4

    now I'am on step ONE.
