Which Heavy Lifter AP/AV Plane for my requirements?

Hi guys,

well, i am looking to get a plank for some AP work, to work besides my
Logo 700.
i want it for jobs where I need to go higher, further away, or need for
example to take multiple pictures of a field, at the same height.

What i want to transport:
Everything from a Canon A640, over a Panny SD9 eventually to a Canon XSI
with wideangle lens (approx 900grams). If it can take more, even
better.

Mount:
I don't want a plane like the solution or ORB on rcgroups, because i
don't just want the cam pointing out forwards, i want to add a
2-axis-gimbal, for example a 2PX from PS1 or something similar.

What else needs to go on it.
Planning of having it equiped with FPV. (enough space for antennas etc.)

It will have a ArduMEGA on it, so for big jobs it will do
the flying and i can concentrate on the pictures (so another max.
200gramms payload)

I would like it to have as good STOL-capabilities as possible, just in
case i ever need road-landings, and fields here aren't good to land.

Think i am looking at a Pusher-configuration, because i will need the camera gimbal upfront.

Should have big wheels so you can land on uneven path.

And very important: Portability!
I don't really want a 150cm wing, which is not detachable, and/or
seperatable.
No problem with having a 2m wingspan plane or max 2,5m (although i think
that is difficult for close landing) as long as it will be nice and
easy and quick to take appart and store easily.

I'd like to have camera able to shoot out front, so either pusher motor
or motor would have to be high up.

My flying skills are fine, not first plane, can torque and do all sorts
of fun, and flown alot of planes.

Don't mind a bit of building, can have the plank cut on a styro-cutter
somewhere in germany, if there are plans, but it shouldn't be really
difficult.

I would prefer styro/elapor, "isolate your roof" material instead of
wood, in case i ever crash land it.

Is there anything like this around, would be very appreciative for any
links...

Also interested in which sort of planes you guys use, but that perhaps
should be a extra thread..

thanks guys
Daniel

  • Hey Ric,
    thanks for your information.
Yeah, i am building up an ArduMega Easy Glider at the moment, flown planks for some time now, so it isn't my first plane.

Basically I am just suprised, that gimbals haven't really "hit" the rc-plane market... Everyone uses them for helis, 3 axis even, and no one would just strap a cam to the helicopters canopy, but it seems that a lot of people do it with planks.

I don't want an immortal plane, made of Elapor, because i know there isn't such a plane. I just think a) Elapor may be lighter so capable of carrying more and b) if i crash, well it may protect the cam better and i have the possibility of glueing it back together.

So i thought, there must be a big Plane somewhere that is easily equipable with a gimbal.

Would you care showing some more information and pictures on your cessna? can be via email if you want to...

    Otherwise, still looking...

Just a few thoughts... I have 2 EasyStars and have had several nose first crashes on one but as you say, being made of Elapor, it survived well with only minor bending and briusing.

For heavy lifting I have an 81" Cessna Skymaster from NitroPlanes.

This is fitted with a chin ball cam using a the same KX191 from Rangevideo that is in my EZs.
Only diff is that now it is inside a cheapey ball cam turret from ebay.

Also, I have 2 digital cameras in the fuselage for oblique and downward photos.

Since this plane is alot heavier what with the cameras and the 4 lipos, I do not expect it to survive a crash.
Not just because it's balsa/ply/fg... even Elapor wouldn't save a plane this heavy.
