I am about to buy a new laptop to run my APM planner and was wondering if it will run OK on windows 7 ? And do you recomend windows 7 rather than sticking with XP ?

I'm using Windows 7 x64 and everything works really well. I'd definitely recommend 7 over XP. XP is a nice operating system, but it's somewhat outdated. 7 has quite a few improvements over XP, and is a lot more polished than Vista.
If you're using your personal laptop as a ground station, I also suggest you make a partition just for APM and any other software you use. I just installed Windows 7 on a new laptop in this way, one partition for UAV stuff and one for everything else. That way you keep your UAV partition stable so you know everything works.
