Is an X frame with non 90 degree angle of arms possible, think hexa without the front and back facing arms.

If yes where in the code is the motor speed mixing algorithm or setting that would need adjusting?

ArduCopter 2 supports both Hexa + and Hexa X configurations. Only thing what you need to do it to keep your APM always facing forward.
