Power Connection for APM 2.5

I have an APM 2.5 with a power module and J1 is open. The ESC I have has a switch. The ESC is connected to the Output Port 3 on the APM. The power module to connected to the power port on the APM. The receiver is connected to the APM on the input side and one port on the receiver only has power running to one output port nf the APM for the servos. When I plug in the battery, everything turns on even though the switch on the ESC is not engaged. Is that okay? Is the switch on the ESC really not doing anything?  Thanks!

Yes, that's fine. Both APM and the Rx are powered by the Power Module. The servos, however, should be powered by the ESC on the output rail.
