I'm wondering if it's possible to do the initial setup and tuning, including ESC calibration, of a new Y6 -or any other copter using APM- using only the telemetry radios.
If not, what is missing?

What angle are you thinking of? Do you mean without an RC transmitter? Or without plugging in a physical USB cable?
I think it's pretty much possible to do almost everything with the telemetry radios (and RC transmitter).
- Radio, accelerometer and compass calibration can all be done this way.
- ESC calibration doesn't use telemetry for anything anyway - just RC transmitter and power connections
- Manual tuning can be done using Channel 6 option (which can be set up via telem radios) or via autotune.
Some things you cant do via telemetry radios:
- update firmware
- download logs
