Activating GPS?

Hello all,

I am building an Arducopter 2.5 kit from DIYDrones.  When I first purchased the kit, I ordered the MediaTek GPS unit.  When I plugged it in to the APM, the red light came on only very weakly and I never got a signal according to Mission Planner.  I took the copter outside under clear skies to make sure I had a chance to acquire a GPS signal but no luck.  So I ordered a uBlox unit instead.

The uBlox unit's red LED lights up brightly when I plug it in to the APM, but the blue LED never comes on at all.  I took this unit outside as well to give it a chance to acquire a GPS signal, but still no luck.

According to the current DIYDrones page for ordering the uBlox, "The units will ship pre-configured for ArduPilot Mega use" http://store.3drobotics.com/products/3dr-gps-ublox-lea-6-7

Receiving two bad units in a row seems unlikely.  Is there a setting somewhere in Mission Planner that has to be activated in order to make use of an off-board GPS unit?

Thanks,

-David

  • Give it some extra time. Mine took almost 6 min initially to lock. Subsequent locks are much faster. No settings needed, I believe the apm detects which GPS is connected via AT commands.
