Bad GPS Pos / high HDOP

I have a hard time getting a good HDOP and enough satellites with my 2013 3DR Y6 (APM 2.6 with ArduCopter 3.1.5, uBlox GPS).

HDOP hardly gets below 2 point something even if it can see 6 sats.

Though I live in an area surrounded by quite some mountains, my Android phone (Nexus 4), lying just beside my Y6, usually sees 1 or two sats more than APM and shows a HDOP around or below 1 with the GPS Status & Toolbox app.

Do I need a need a new GPS or a GPS mast?

Kind regards,

Philipp

  • Oops. I made a mistake. I'm running ArduCopter v3.1.2

  • Same here. The problem became most obvious to us when we updated to V3.1.5. At somepoint we were not able to arm the copter. Disabling geofence helped but is not what we want.

Can anybody confirm that the same GPS hardware worked better while still at older firmware versions?

  • Funny you posted this Phillip. I was going to post the same thing last night.

I too am having a hard time getting the HDOP down below 2. It will, after a bit, settle down
to around 1.7 but jumps around. Sometimes up to 2.7. That is with a lock on 10 to 11 satellites.
I tried swapping out the gps but with the same results.

Any insight as to what may be the problem would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks,
    Joe

  • Hi, you should get a new M8 GPS module from csgshop. Results seem great compared to basic 6 series GPS.
    • Hi Julien,

could you please include a link to that M8 GPS?
