the battery provides power to the ESC.
The ESC is a little computer which controls exactly when to provide power to the motor to make it spin.
the motor spins and provides thrust.
the APM (or whatever controller you're using) connects to the ESC and tells it what speed it wants the motor to spin at (using a PWM signal).
