Having YAW problem with microquad

I have an APM1.4/2560. I had a 1280 on it but just changed that to 2560 to be able to install the latest version.

What is happening is a strong yaw clockwise. It will hover though it is impossible to fly because of the yaw. I don't have GPS or magneto on it.

I've connected to the MP by usb and the yaw gyro sensor output seems fine.

What else can I check? What logs should I be looking at for a clue?

I'm running 2.8.1 and something else that doesn't seem right is after the bootup light sequence, I don't get a flashing or solid green even though the motors will arm and it will fly with the fast yaw.

  • But in the beginning I used my first APM1/1280 without magneto or GPS and it never did that. This is a fast yaw like if you pushed the rudder full right. On my other copters I do that in simple mode just for effect but this does it always. Even if i trim the rudder full the other way it doesn't counter it.

It's a very small quad with 4" props.

It's really hard to fly a quad without a mag or GPS. Gyros drift (especially the older ones in APM 1) and you need a mag in particular to counter that. On planes, which are always moving forward, you can counter with GPS alone.
