Tried simple mode for the first time today, It was anything but simple LOL.
Take off was fine but as I rotated everything went wrong. I was just in a hover, turned left 90 degrees and expected a push forward on the stick would make it fly away from me. It moved away at about 45 degrees then became unpredictable.
The compass seems to be working ok, so I presume I've got something wrong

Mark, let me guess, you also fly rc helis, right?
I had EXACTLY the same problem, it boggled my brain for the longest time until it one day clicked.
the Simple mode works 100%. its your(my) brain that is(was) the problem.
I took off, rotated 90 degrees, then flew forward, and nothing went in the expected directions. Only then did i realise that I was no longer facing the same direction as Switch -on. I had a natural tendency to turn my body in the direction of the quad. If you do that , your brain thinks : forward on the stick is away from me. But it isnt. think about it.
when i gave the quad to a total noob, he managed simple mode SO quickly, but my head had a problem with it for some reason.
Even after i realised what I was doing wrong, I had ro FORCE myself to keep my feet planted and not turn my body, and then had to keep saying out loud "red leg forward, red led forward" etc. Sounds silly, but thats what I had to do to get my old, misused brain to co-operate.
Hope your problem is as simple as that, and that you dont have some hardware or setup problem. let us know what transpires...

Firstly, the declination ought to be set. Then the compass has to be put through a "learning experience", one way or the other, before it can be relied on in flight. One way to do this is to make a flight where you fly around, turning this way and that, and then landing and disarming. This saves the "offsets" the magnetometer requires for a degree of reliability. After that you can fly in Simple Mode.
1) compass is not calibrated as they should
2) your declination is wrong
3) a magnetic field parasite wreaks havoc with the compass
Did you calibrate your compass in the MP and set the declination?
