Using a computer joystick without RC

Hello,

Quick question. Can I use a joystick for manual control without RC?

I successfully enabled my joystick. When APM is connected to an RC receiver, MP shows various PWM values in ch1out ~ ch4out according to the throttle stick movement.

However, all the PWM values are 1100 without the RC receiver even when APM is armed, and I move the joystick's throttle stick.

I followed this instruction.(http://code.google.com/p/arducopter/wiki/Joystick) I think I am supposed to be able to control APM only by using joystick via XBee. I can use a joystick for control if APM loses RC while flying. (which means I turn off RC transmitter while flying) That may be because of RC receiver's fail safe, which can keep the same PWM values as the ones when it loses connection.

I have a RC transmitter/receiver, but I have 2 quads. I don't want to plug in and out the RC receiver all the time. I will use a joystick for my indoor-flying quad, so RC gears are not necessary. It would be great if I do not have to use RC gears for my indoor quad.

I appreciate any idea you might have.
