What would you put into an Acro Quad?

I currently have a 3DR Y6 with the 880kv motors running ArduCopter 3.1... it's an amazing workhorse of a machine and flies like a dream.  It's an FPV-flying, football-delivering, go-pro filming beast.  The Y6 is fantastic, stable, and totally reliable, but I really don't think it's the kind of machine that should be used for flips and rolls and acro stuff.

Now I'm interested in building something "rough-and-tumble" to use in Acro Mode.  I'm assuming that some sort of over-powered quad would be the way to go, but there are just so many options out there...

So I'm asking all you ardupilots: what frame/motors/batteries/props/escs/etc would you recommend for a fast fun acro build?  Something light and quick that could handle some flips and rolls... a sports car, not a tank. There's no need for gimbal or anything, my Y6 can take care of the "normal" drone tasks...

  • I built mine from scratch. Bought some CF sheets from HK and used some aluminium square tubes I had lying around.

I think it's better if you build the frame from scratch because if you plan to do acro stuff... you are going to crash it hard. This way you can fix it yourself and won't need to wait for spare parts to arrive.

I use Tiger Motor 1100Kv, 20-30A SimonK ESC's, 4S batteries and 10x4.7 CF props and the frame is 46cm from motor to motor, so I can get crazy and use the 12x3.8 props :D

As a test, I am going to build a fiberglass mono frame to see how it works.
