MaxBotix Outdoor Rugged Sensor

Has anyone used these or have an idea if it's possible to use these for the forward sonars on a rover?  My application needs to be fairly rugged and after discussions with MaxBotix sales rep, I think these are what I need.  Any thoughts on how to incorporate whatever it is I need?

  • Hello, this is Tom Bonar from MaxBotix Inc.

    I wanted to provide some additional information regarding ultrasonic sensors on rovers and UAV's.  The MB7052 is not recommended on this rovers, even though it may work.  The MB7052 has advanced filtering that has incorporates a stability filter as well as a "Most-Likely Filter".  This most likely filter ranges to the target that returns the largest amplitude reflection.

    For applications with rovers and UAV's we recommend the MB1240.  Land based robot applications are able to use other sensors as well, the recommended sensor for these may change depending on the target and the distance you wish to detect the target.

    Our MB1240 has been used on many UAV applications, and like TCIII has stated, some users have given us the same feed back.

    The only time we recommend an outdoor sensor for these applications is when they will be operating in wet environments or during any precipitation.  If we do recommend a sensor it is typically the MB7060, because it is the base model in the line with no added filters.

    For more information on using one of our sensors with a UAV or other robot, please read our article entitled "Using a MaxSonar with UAV's".

  • Hello this is Tom Bonar from MaxBotix Inc.

    @Thomas

    The MB7052 has the same voltage scaling as the MB1240.  The only XL-MaxSonar sensors that have a different voltage scaling is the parts that have a range longer than 765cm, and those sensors scale at (Vcc/1024)=mV per 2 cm.  If you put an MB7052 on your UAV and it has a scaling option for the MB1240 or MB1200 (or any other standard range XL-MaxSonar), the MB7052 is a drop in replacement.

    Please let me know if you have any questions.

    @Lake,

    Unless you plan to run in the rain or very wet conditions, the MB1240s work quite well and are a lot cheaper. I have two of them mounted on the front of my Slash rover.

    TCIII
