The Bicycle and the UAV

I was having a conversation with a good ol aussie fella about regulations and together we came up with this analogy quite by accident.

Having a pilots license to fly a civil aircraft has little to do with flying model aircraft! I know plenty of pilots that would crash a model aircraft in 5 seconds!  But being in the same airspace with civil aircraft and civil pilots is the problem. Being a pilot I know the regulations for civil flight. It's like this "The world of the air has it's roads and rules just like driving a bicycle.

If your riding a bicycle you don't need a drivers license! But! If you don't know the rules of the road? Your going to run into trouble! Knowing the rules of the road are common to most everyday people. Knowing the rules of the air is very uncommon! It's like not knowing a red light means stop.

Pilots navigate just like people in cars do only in a different way! If you can read a nautical map you can see right away there are a lot of rules and a lot of different kinds of roads! The thing about the sky is it's 3D! And it has a whole new dimension added! Driving a car is more like a 2D world.

You would think in a civil aircraft you could turn sharp and avoid a collision. That really is not the case! Aircraft turn slowly when flown safely! Your average pilot is not a aerobatic flyer (not even close)! That's like the difference where your grandmother driving off the road right onto a race track!

Your average pilot is like your average driver and just as fallible himself! Lot's of people have a drivers license and can drive a car. Getting a pilots license is about the same thing not everybody is the greatest driver but they are driving on the road.

Flying is very safe and there are fewer cars on the "road" but you get what I'm leading into?

Anyway all the governments want to do is ensure everyone's safety! I don't agree with all the rules of the road! (I hate seat belts) but I have to follow them anyway.

Granted most hobby drones wont fly above 400ft AGL but if they do! You understand that's like a baby stroller coasting out onto the road :)

What they want is to insure that doesn't happen.

How will they do it? Well time will tell, but there is a point to knowing the rules of the road.

I just want you to know I'm not advocating anyone getting a pilots license! I'm just trying to provide a glimpse from another point of view. I'm not suggesting a bicycle license either! But I would suggest knowing the rules of the road before riding on one :)

Learn about airspace and your going to be safe and ahead of the game.

 Cheers!
