    This question has already been answered a few times on YT. Search YT for RCModelReviews and within Bruces many videos there are a few explaining how antennas work and the strengths and weaknesses for the different types of antennas. He also explains how you can make your own.

      I have watched a lot of his videos and I want to assume that on 5.8ghz the FPV antenna information he gives applies the same to the antenna on the transmitter and receiver that are not being used as hardware for FPV but communication from the transmitter to the receiver to fly the craft.

      That's a good question.  My guess as to why the CP antennas are talked about/used more with the video is that there is a lot more bandwidth required (not sure if that is an accurate term for analog video, but you know what I mean) for the video transmission than there is for data sent for telemetry, or for actual control transmissions between transmitter and receiver.
