What is Solo?

Reading through the various posts it's obvious that many here have an understanding of what is Solo. I was hoping someone could provide either a link to or a summary for what is Solo to current, future and/or potential users of the platform.

Personally I cannot connect the dots for the system's foundation(s). I grasp that it's expandable and the community builds based on open source. I think I grasp why, but how?

My question and I'm sure others would appreciate is an understanding about the platform...beyond being a "cinema" platform.  The whole 3DR, APM, ArduPilot, ArduCopter, MAVLink, PXD/4, DroneCode, GitHub, Python, Linux, (even) DIYDrones and other entities involved...what do these pieces/connections mean to what is Solo. How, when or why are these pieces important to Solo and its users?

Not looking for a detailed reply (won't mind if you do however) or doing the work for me, just a lay person explanation for what all the pieces mean. DIY’ers have grown/built around these answers for a few years now, by releasing the Solo into the RTF arena 3DR just brought a large group of interested people to the DIY community. Speaking for myself, just a lot of information to digest for my current level of understanding. I’m certain others would benefit greatly having a further depth of knowledge to what is Solo.

Personally I'm excited to have this RFT platform based on open source.  I've been reading off and on about 3DR and DIYDrones for over three years.  I just never had the abilities or time to invest from a ground up UAV project.  I have built my son several Lego planes, helicopters and rovers over the years, but they were only mobilized by our imagination and power....;)  I envy you people with the devotion and knowledge to make your imagination come to life.

Kindest regards...Richard -

  • In short, as with a lot of things open source, its whatever you want it to be, and if enough people also agree with you then that is what it becomes.

A lot of things get built in the open source world, many die but many become popular enough to pick up momentum and carry on, then they branch and go off in different directions.

The solo is a RTF quad for anyone that wants to fly whether you care about open source or not.

Its also a hackers wet dream, so if enough people also want to hack it, we will see all sorts of derivations and improvements and new products based on the solo.
All these things will influence what becomes part of Solo 2.
If thousands of people hack there solo's to add infrared then we may see better infrared capabilities on Solo 2.
