About Me:

Based out of Carleton University, we are a team of undergraduate and graduate students in engineering streams such as aerospace, mechanical, and electrical. The team was formed in 2009 to give students an opportunity to apply the knowledge they have gained through their coursework by designing, building, and flying a real aircraft. We compete in the annual Unmanned Systems Canada Student UAV Competition. Our website can be found at: https://sites.google.com/site/blackbirduav/ YouTube videos at: https://www.youtube.com/user/BlackbirdUAV

Please tell us a bit about your UAV interest

As many of our members are in the mechanical or aerospace streams of engineering, the main team focus was initially about aircraft design and manufacturing. After our first competition, we quickly realized our deficiencies as a team in the systems aspect, and shifted our focus to primarily focus on the autonomous systems and camera and target detection systems. Our systems for 2013/2014 include an APM 2.5 autopilot running a modified version of ArduPlane, Raspberry Pi on-board computer controlling a Canon Powershot camera with real-time downloading of images to a ground station, custom designed-and-built airfarme (7.5ft wingspan, 6kg), and combined in-house and open-source software for rapid post-processing of image data.
