About Me:

I am a Chemical/Biochemical engineer who works for the DOE. I am a research scientist and do research in advanced gasification systems as well as multi-phase flow. I enjoy wood working, CNC machining, and robotics for fun. I am new to the UAV hobby and will be building a quadcopter of my own design and blogging about it here.

Please tell us a bit about your UAV interest

I am interested in learning about motion control systems/algorithms as well as experimenting with extremely light weight/stiff/strong structures. I have a CNC laser cutter that I built (see www.buildlog.net) and will use that to manufacture pieces I need for various projects. A couple buddies of mine in town also are interested and have started to build their own from a kit. I want to design and build mine from scratch (minus the controls because I am really impressed with the APM 2.0 development and it would take me years to build up all that tech).

"What about sending the gps position info down on one of the audio channels for the video feed.  Several other trackers do this.  If you stream the position from the APM at a reasonable bit rate you should be able to pick that up on the ground.  Then…"

"I was thinking about the pointing and position errors... do you think it would help to add a gps unit to the ground station?  This would really help eliminate the drift when the units are close.  This is essentially differential gps.  The assumption…"

I have just finished the first revision of my full frame.  The arms are designed to be very ridged in every bending moment.  I added anchor points to the arms about half way out.  This will allow me to attach stay wires that will also help keep the…

All,I am currently designing my own frame for a quad.  I want to use the AC2836-358 motors, but I can't find any information on the bolt hole pattern.  There seem to be a few common motor mount hole patterns out there, most this size are either a…

Well, I decided to start seriously designing and building my quad-copter frame.  I recently build a CNC laser and can use that to cut all the parts I need for the frame.  I plan to use polycarbonate because it is strong, tough, and fairly light. …
