We are happy to announce that users from around the world can now access MachUp, the world's easiest drone design software. Designers from any country (except those on the US sanctions list) may use the software for aerodynamic development of…

Doug Hunsaker commented on Doug Hunsaker's blog post Why sweep hurts endurance and what to do about it
"Hi Adrian,
We are trying to make the software available outside the US and will let you know when it is.
With regards to your airfoil thickness question, this is a matter of sweep definition. Sweep is not actually a rotation about the normal axis.…"

Doug Hunsaker commented on Doug Hunsaker's blog post Short Course on Mission-Specific Aircraft Design
"Hey Guys, Thanks for your comments.
We put this video together for people who don't have much experience designing - just to give them some basic places to start. You are all obviously more experienced and have great comments on how to improve the…"

"@Mostyn: I just uploaded Part 2. Let me know what you think. It was definitely interesting to look at the plots as a function of lift coefficient. You can find the video here:

"@Justin - Thanks for the comment. You're right that these are very simple concepts. I hear of lots of guys using rules of thumb to design their small drones, and want to point out some of the basic ideas that govern the physics. Hopefully this helps…"

Doug Hunsaker commented on Doug Hunsaker's blog post How to avoid pitfalls when using taper and twist
"@Mostyn: Good point. I failed to mention that in the video. I'll put together a "part 2" that compares the performance over a range of lift coefficients.
Yes, you can use different airfoils at the wing root and wing tip. MachUp assumes a linear…"

Hey guys,Just put together a quick video to show the effects of taper ratio and twist and how they interact. Turns out using rules of thumb in this area can be detrimental. I have used similar rules of thumb in the past, but thought it was high time…

Doug Hunsaker commented on Doug Hunsaker's blog post Why sweep hurts endurance and what to do about it
"@Martin: I just looked at the sectional Cl distribution along the wing, and as you suspected, it does show that it will tip stall. I plan to release a video soon on the effects of twist/washout, which could mitigate this issue for tapered wings.…"

Doug Hunsaker commented on Doug Hunsaker's blog post Why sweep hurts endurance and what to do about it
"@Mark: Thanks. It was fun to put together.
I didn't quite get your question about calculating the sum of the lift. Each case had the same wing area, and each case was set to the same lift coefficient. So each wing I studied produced the same amount…"

Hey guys,I just wrapped up a project that taught me a lot about the effects of sweep on flying wings. Turns out sweep can significantly increase drag and hurt endurance. Sweep isn't all bad, though. There are ways to make a flying wing stable if you…

"Hey guys,
Sam and I have talked a lot about how we can better serve the DIY community with MachUp. We're considering adding another license type for non-profit organizations and hobbyists that would be heavily discounted. But before we do, we'd like…"
