About Me:

I used to be a programmer by trade (C, Fortran, Haskell, Common Lisp, Python, Ruby on Linux, *BSD and QNX RTOS). At the age of 32 I decided to go back to university, and now I have completed a BS in physics and is currently writing my master thesis in theoretical cosmology. I have loved flying machines since as long as I can remember.

Please tell us a bit about your UAV interest

I'm building a quad copter based on APM2.5. The quad is now complete, and I have a stack of XPS foam which is waiting to be cut into a flying wing UAV.

"I can produce wings up to 110 cm from the foam blocks I have available, so a wingspan of 220 cm + midsection is possible... I will have to wait for the 32SWG nichrome wire to cut that kind of length with the power supplies I have available. The…"

"Tero, that is a nice wing! What camera was used for this video? My next project is to build a larger plane with more wingspan, I want something that flies well at slow speed, and with enough carry capacity to handle full autopilot and fpv setup."

"The ESC on the bottom just fits nicely with the length of the wires and the CG. I might recess it more and add some padding, but I have a few of these ESC's around so I'm not too concerned about it.
It may be slightly underpowered, haven't flown it…"

"Great tips, thank you! I had initially limited the range of the aileron servos on the radio, but placing the rods like you say will of course allow full movement and resolution of the servo and should be smoother.

SaadTiwana: That is clear…"

One of the glass fibre arms of my quad shattered after repeated hard landings on a hard-wood floor, so I have some carbon fibre replacement arms on order. Meanwhile I thought it would be fun to experiment with foam cutting and trying to build a…

Eirik Mikkelsen commented on Eirik Mikkelsen's blog post Update on first APM 2 quad build
"I don't think the design of the legs is of importance, in fact the 3DR ArduCopter frame has the legs mounted closed to the center of the frame and tilted outwards. There are also frames with helicopter style landing skids."

"I'm still waiting for mine, ordered in July and with some luck I will receive it in October. I'm hoping it is powerful enough to do something with the Kinect sensor, perhaps indoor quad navigation / obstacle avoidance will be possible?"

"I was expecting someone to point out the loose bullet connector ;-) Actually it's completely stuck, I think perhaps some solder has managed to find its way under the springs on the male connector. I am going to fix that soon!

Forgot to mention the…"
