Lifelong nerd with a passion for aviation and engineering

Please tell us a bit about your UAV interest

I've always been deeply interested in drones (especially quadcopters), but first decided to take the leap into the hobby after working on a friend's film project. One of the camera guys brought a DJI mini, and we were all completely blown away by the video quality that such a small drone was able to provide. After getting my own DJI mini, I fell in love with flying. It's just such an easy and accessible way to get into the air, and the camera quality is very impressive. As an unrepentant hacker and tinkerer, though -- I began to quickly feel frustrated by the limited customization options that DJI allows, and grow concerned that the reliance on DJI's software and regulatory fights with the US government may limit my ability to use the drone how I'd like. As a result, I'd like to learn more about what other people in the hobby are doing, and how I might be able to better automate and directly control the drones I use. I would be especially interested in learning about using drones for mapping and scientific data collection.
