"In my opinion the best is to use an ultrasonic altimeter up to 16meter, then the GPS shall do the work. If you do not trust it , you could use a barometric sensor in order to have redundant data, and mixing both with a kalman filter.

Based on my personal experience (I own an X-UFO and a few model helicopters e.g. Trex 450V2) I can tell you that if you want speed and battery life you need a helicopter. If you want just hover take some pictures, see the neigbourhood…"
