v3.0.1rc1 will not install to my APM2.5

I have APM2.5 with V2.9.1b installed and using MP 1.2.59 my quad wont update to v3.0.1rc1 even though MP goes through the motions and then shows Done. But on connecting to APM the software still shows V2.9.1b what am I doing wrong?
