Maritime RobotX Challenge

Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University is excited to have been selected as one of 15 teams worldwide to participate in the inaugural Maritime RobotX Challenge.  We thought it would be good to post some links and video here so people in the community can see what the competition is about and start following the teams.  We had our first successful test a few weeks ago and already have the platform running autonomously.

Each team is awarded one WAM-V platform and a stipend to outfit it with the most sophisticated autonomy package they are capable of assembling.  Tasks range from obstacle avoidance, navigation and sonar homing.

We will do our best to answer any questions.

AUVSI Conference

This week the Robotics Association at Embry-Riddle attended the Association for Unmanned Vehicle Systems International (AUVSI) North America conference in Washington D.C. We had 14 students and 6 faculty at the event.

 

At the conference we met Jordi Munoz, Gigio Romero and Geoffrey Barrows. They all came by our booth at the conference and we all talked for a while about DIYDrones and the Ardupilot. We are excited to continue using the Ardupilot on our Easystar aircraft which we had on display at the conference.

 

The conference was a big success for our students. We were able to network with many major companies, and we will probably get significant donations for our projects. The Stratasys booth had one of our Monocopters on display that they printed on their Fortus500 FDM printer. 

 

We were also able to fly a couple of our vehicles in the demonstration area. We flew our monocopter and our quadrotor at the same time in the netted arena. To everyone's surprise, they didn't hit each other! 

 

Our students had a great time at the worlds largest unmanned systems conference and we are looking forward to next year's conference in Las Vegas, NV!

Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University IARC Quadrotor

This is the first flight video of the Embry-Riddle IARC Quadrotor. This will be our fourth year in the IARC competition, we are moving away from our award winning monocopter platform this year in favor of a quadrotor. It will be fully autonomous by the time the IARC competition rolls around this summer.

Some specs:

Autopilot: HoverflyPro

Motors: Scorpion SII-2208-1280

Props: Draganfly Innovations 8x4.5

ESC: CastleCreations Thunderbird 36

Tx/Rx: Spektrum Dx6i Tx and AR6100e Rx

Frame: Black sections are FDM (Fused Deposition Modeling) printed PolyCarbonate, White section is FDM printed PC-ABS. Build-to-fly time: about 3 hours total for the machine to print all four ducts and about 15 minutes for us to assemble and fly. (not including shipping time from Boeing)

The Robotics Association at Embry-Riddle is a multidisciplinary student organization that operates Unmanned and Autonomous Vehicle Systems of all shapes and sized. We are the only school on the planet to compete in all 5 major AUVSI student competitions (IGVC, RoboBoat, SUAS, IARC, RoboSub) we also compete in the NASA lunabotics competition.
