  • BaclakshRC, I don't think the Phantom will do Spline waypoints, and it makes all the difference in the world for my videos.  I know it will do arcs on corners but not really the same.  If the

This example has no post video stabilization, uses an older APM FC and a 2 axis gimbal, as you can see Spline just makes everything look so natural and less robotic, even tho this was a full robotic autonomous flight with no hands on controller.  I just don't think the NAZA does this among other things, and I have no doubts the Solo will be soooo much better than even this.

  • I'm a dji fan by no means, but you don't need a wookong to do waypoints. DJI has announced an sdk that will allow developers to implement pretty much all of the features that the solo is touting. Youve basically got two similarly capable machines and one costs $1000 more to get feature parity.
  • It's all up to the user... for those wanting a flying toy that takes good video with limited capability get the Phantom 3. However, if you want a true flying robot get the Solo... exactly as its name implies. It looks like it can also be upgraded with future hardware in the accessory bay. Plus it looks a lot cooler

And a wookong alone costs $1,000 just to have waypoints which is somethign you get for a fraction of the price from a pixhawk.

  • You are right Rob, but I find that I never use my bells and whistles.  I currently fly a QAV540G with the Wookong M and 50 Waypoints capability on my iPad (this was not built for $1000, nor does it have an HD downlink).  I have not used waypoints since I initially tested the functionality.

I think that what most people are looking for is 25 minute flight time, HD downlink, a stabilized camera, and =/< $1000 tag.  For most, additional features like smart flight software are icing on the cake, but are not enough to justify spending more money.

The Phantom is there now, and I would own it but for the mandatory geofencing and potential for forced future operational downgrades from its corporate overlord.

I assume 3DR will get there.  I would prefer to purchase from 3DR, being that it is a domestic company, even if the manufacturing is outsourced (inevitable in this day and age).

  • Backlash, based on what exactly?  You can't build a quad with the capability of the Solo for that price.

  • At a cost of close to twice that of the Phantom 3 (with less flying time), I will pass on the Solo.  The software look intriguing, but I don't mind actually flying the quad myself.

Of course DJI's forced geofencing means that I will not purchase a Phantom 3 either.  It looks like I am stuck building multi's for the foreseeable future.

  • You have to realize how far 3dr has come since their first Quadcopter kits with apm 4 years ago. Amazing progress and at that rate DJI will soon be passed.
  • Probably not Adam, since they write its an Arm Cortex A9 and the Arduino TRE is an A8

  • Developer

I am curious about which is taken for the purposes nVidia Tegra or Intel Edison ?

Specs say 1ghz ARM9 CPU and they use it for media streaming and HDMI output, so I would bet on the Ti DaVinci TMS320 media chipset.

  • hmmmmm, why even sell it without a gimbal? seems like theyre just trying to make the price point seem better at under 1k. Once i've puchased the gimbal and a gopro hero 4 your looking at almost 2K, significantly more than a phantom 3 which includes all of this. i know the fancy 1ghz processor and stuff is nice, but i don't think the consumers of this are going to care as it's supposed to be ready to fly.

in saying this im probably going to pre-order one!
