Tring to get started

So i found this page after i watched the DIY UAV segment on wired the other day, and it has been something that i have been interesting in trying to do ever since i saw the preditor and the global hawk. But i just didnt know where to start, and the ideas that i had would have ended up costing thousand of dollars. so im really happy to find a group of people interested in doing the same thing.

so enogh about that. i was looking around the interenet today tring to find suitable aircraft for my project when i came around this.

(sorry for some reason the insert a link thing wasnt working)

a prebuilt comes with everything uav. the camera in it sucks alot, only 26 pics :( but im sure that could be modified easily. but i just thought that it was kinda cool that there was a kit out there for people who wanted to get started.

well i think that is gonna be it for now.

That seems an excellent plan!! As before a good radio is handy.

Futaba and JR are the main players.

Enjoy your aircraft and post some pics.

  • thanks for the comments eveyone. i really wasnt going to buy that kit, i just thought it was interesting. right now i am putting togeather a plane the my dad bought in the 80's and never put togeather it is one of those gliders that has a motor that runs for about 6 minutes to get it to altitude and then you glide it down. i figure ill start with that one "since its free to me" except i have to get a controler and all the servos and such but it should be fun. and then ill see if there is space to modify this one to put a camera in and such, then go and get myself something a little more advanced and try that.
  • I got myself a GWS Slow Stick. It's an ARF that is easy for beginners and there are whole communities devoted to modifying it for payloads.

Chris is bang on with his comments on what makes a good starter aircraft.
Start with a stable, forgiving model that is easily repaired at the field.
The Predator drone models advertised on several sites as a "UAV" may look cool, but are not a good solid starting point.

I would look for a package (radio and aircraft) for an Easystar, they are very easy to fly and could be used at a later date with a camera as many many people do.

Buying a better radio will always pay off in the end.

    As with everything.

You get whats ya pays for.

    Good luck

I'd avaoid that one. First, it's just an RC plane with a bad camera and poorly-supported foam wings--although it says it's a UAV it isn't one. Second, if you're just trying to learn how to fly RC planes you'll have a lot more sucess with something like a Hobbyzone Firebird Phantom. Then you can build a proper UAV, like the ones here.
