That my list of 9x radio mods, Keeping it DIY, and under $200 :)

First one is 'er9x' firmware super easy:

Here is wiki page and good 'How to wire' videos: Part 1 Part 2 Part 3 you'll need some programmer this one works fine

also you can use arduino board

'eepe' tool is here

Next one is the 6 position 'mode' switch for ArduPlane/Copter, here is my original mod and complete 'how to' from Paul. That is 2 pole switch, so its 2 switches in one and I used that second switch for LEDs.

Next is the Turnigy 9X LCD Backlight Kit from HK 'how to' is here :)9X-LCD-BL.jpg?width=600IMPORTANT !!! DON'T DO THAT

Step3(2).jpg?width=600

Just cut-off some of extra foam but don't try to completely remove it, big mess !

Speaker Mod with Haptic Feedback really cool one :)

Next FrSky Telemetry

There is number of ways to do it 'How to modify your 9x to support telemetry'

one is using 'FrSkyLite' that also used for 'FrSky' firmware upgrades.

But here is another one that also converts 'FrSky' module to support firmware upgrades via FTDI cable.

You'll need to perform minor surgery on that DHT DIY module :)

  • thanks for this, real helpful info! i like how you have put the mode switch in the middle of the radio, i might do the same :)

  • To remove the foam backing for the backlight, just use a heatgun on it. The adhesive weakens quickly.

  • Looking forward to the new board. My board is fried because wrong input voltage. The regulators were burned because of the high voltage drop when supplied from a 3S LIPO. Tried to upgrade the power supply but ended up frying my board because of bad wires. I suggest switching regulators.

    Please keep us posted!

  • It looks like it should be able to support a serial stream as well: http://rcmodelreviews.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=46&t=1217&p...

  • Could a FrSky Rx telemetry link send back the GPS position if you extracted it from the Mavlink data and converted it to a suitable speed serial data stream, in case you land in a bush and need some help finding the aircraft? Or does it only support voltage readouts and RSSI?

@OG, even if you keep the standard 9x firmware, do the backlight mod... the kit is only US$5 from hobbyking... I think they have a couple of different colors to choose from.  It's pretty simple to do, no soldering.  I got lucky, my foam backing peeled of cleanly.

  • Thinking about getting one of the 9x units - can anyone comment on the quality/feel of the sticks compared to say a Futaba 7C / FF9 (i.e a 'traditional' tx). I like the idea of having 9 channels and hacking potential, but don't want bad controls!

    @OG, 6-pos-mode-switch

@Monroe, same here !!! Fancy case, built-in FPV screen and so on :) And it still be cheaper than any other radio out there :)
