A bored teen's project:

Hi, I'm a bored teen living in south Georgia; so how's that different from any other teen? Well, I'm bored because what they teach us n school here is stuff I've known for a long time for the most part sooo I was looking around at airplanes online thinking about building a UAV and I came across this site after a while I got permission from my parents to use this site and here I am. I just posted some pictures of my custom airframe I am building and some electronics gear I could hack. I am a noob to real rc models (you know brushless motors and servos and stuff) the only real experience I have is the lego robotics system and messing with junked electonics and stuff. I was wondering if any one could answer the following questions:1. Has anyone launched an NXT or RCX using an all electric aircraft?2.Should I use the monster-truck rc unit to save money or buy a new one?(it is old so it is not proportional)3.Do you have to use a brushless and brand new battery?(could I use the one pictured)4.Could I build a magnetic sensor for the rcx or nxt?5. Does anyone have any comments questions or ideas for me?Here is a link to my pictures:

for some reason it stopped working so here is the page:http://www.diydrones.com/photo/photo/listForContributor?screenName=2le2rve18t2rmThanks,-Robert Drone:)

Just had a look at your airframe, good start.

Have a look here as well for a simple to build flying wing. http://www.mugi.co.uk/ Free plans for you to print and best of all you can use estate agent sign boards to make it.

Ive made a couple and they work well
Mugi - Tough, easy to build, affordable RC aircraft and free plans.
  • Thanks Gary those are some nice looking planes

Robert, a really good hobby for bored teens is girls! Believe it or not they are probably bored as well.

    Anyhow, airframes.

You should have a look for SPADS they are a cool way to use estate agent sign boards and other bits lying around for an airframe.

As for equipment, if you can stand to wash some cars or find a job in store on the weekend some like the Stryker would be a not uncool start. Actually as I think about it, the radian also by parkzone would be a good start.

Over on the All Things That Fly podcast one of the guys describes loosing one in a fly away, maybe you should go search.

    My point though,

By buying a decent Ready To Fly, RTF you will be well on the way. You will have a properly matched speed controller and battery with simple proportional RC.

I would also seek out your local RC club, whilst they might seem difficult to approach I expect the guys will help you more than you might expect.

You might have to take a bit of ribbing, but it will be worth it. Money can't buy the knowledge learnt just watching people with stacks of money crashing their airfcraft!

Keep flying FMS (the free Flying Model Simulator) it all helps and costs less in a crash.

Welcome to Aeromodelling and good luck.

  • thanks to all Please keep posting comments I will check back later I have to go now!
  • the fc-16 looks very expensive!
  • it doesn't really say wether it is electric or not
  • varga-I saw that but i thought it was gas powered. I will check again thanks guys!
  • I have flown on cheap airhogs models and flight sims before I have only crashed twice both times figureing out the flight sim. So ebay for the r.c. and i'll need it huh. Do you think I could hav the rcx pulse the motor by rc fom the ground to create speed differrential? I am using foam and hobby glue and duct-tape (yes duct-tape for the body) also a large expanded [i think] foam block is on the inside for extra strength I plan to encase the electroics in the foam to help protect them. It is incrediblely lite from the 1/4 inch thick foam-board.
  • Hi Robert. No pics in your post! You don't need to go brushless, but you'll probably some time though. Try getting a Mabuchi or Graupner 400 for a start with a cheap 12 amp speed controller. You need a proportional rc unit as well. Try getting those things cheap from Ebay or check out sales on RCgroups.com. Nowadays, yu may find a nice old but extremely reliable Futaba FC-16 (programmable 8 channels) for something like 30-50 USD. Get 5 or 16g servos from Ebay as well for a start. You'll most probably smash your first plane, so be prepared to be repairing many times. But finally, it all would be easier if you could get a nice combo like a Multiplex EasyStar or something similar looking, made out of strong EPP foam. This will last almost forever. Split that between birthday, Christmas and summer job, and you're started.
