Saw this today: http://news.yahoo.com/blogs/sideshow/drone-hunting-colorado-172357477.html

It's interesting that the article leads with a photo of a hexacopter, calls it an octocopter, and the drone bounty being discussed would reward people for turning in "identifiable parts of an unmanned aerial vehicle whose markings and configuration are consistent with those used on any similar craft known to be owned or operated by the United States federal government".  So, presumably it's nothing to do with multi-rotors or hobbyist craft, but that's what they include a photo of?  Sigh.

    @Falcon UAV, sounds like a fun idea, but watch out for all those towers and guy wires... not to mention shotguns!

  • I am about 60 minutes away and would be happy to fly down there the day or two before if anyone else interested.  The whole town is less than one square mile so I could do a high resolution mapping mission in a flight from 100-150m.

  • TCIII...Yeah, that works too. For the longest time, I assumed Duck Dynasty was some wildlife program, like Meerkat Manor. I don't watch a lot of TV...

    @HeliStorm,

    Maybe we should call it "Drone Dynasty".:-)

  • Yeehaw....

    This story is all the more confusing to non-merkins who's view on guns are slightly more conservative. This is not the same conservatism promoted by the NRA it should be noted...

  • Buying a license from your local governing body to shoot down drones flown by your federal governing body?  There's a joke in there somewhere.

    Seems to me that the weekend of the 3rd and 4th of August would be a perfect one to go fly there in a drone love in style event before its enacted. Are there enough members in Colorado to do it? Would the Sparkfun guys send folks??

    http://www.deertrailcolorado.org/ The website does say the next council meeting is in 2011!

    I would hold the event on Jolly Road http://goo.gl/maps/H3Co2 or see if the neighboring towns of Strasburg or Limon would embrace the drone. Anyone else thinking of Whoville when they consider world views?

  • Gary...very cool. I envision selling this service to the paranoid types as training to fight drones. Maybe a class with tips on types of systems one might encounter, etc. Much like the drone detector someone posted before, it would be more sizzle than steak, but at least people could shoot at flying things.

    There have been outfits selling rc aircraft for shoots for years http://www.gnatusa.com

    I have always wondered why that is not held up as commercial use BTW.
